Creative Blocking Solutions

Hi Kiddies, Chatty Patty has been hanging around so I thought I'd take advantage of the fact and write about something that I've wanted to share for some time.
As knitters and crocheters when we finish a project a lot of us will toss them into a basket, box or just into a pile... my, "I'm going to block all those one of these days", piles. This year saw my health decline and I ended up with just such a pile. Poor Kanuck was done about February and sat on a trunk at the foot of the bed for everyone to sit on, the dogs to get their claws into, dirt and who knows, perhaps our nemesis the moth could have gotten to it. Atop that was the Sheepies stole and embroidered CAL that I worked on back in the fall, lastly a bronze Christmas Star which Pixie #1 finished. Mind, these are all excessively awkward in both size and shape. Much of the time blocking in the past involved, vacuuming the carpet, lay down towels and crawling over the floor. Where we'd block a large shawl with wires and T pins before the door sort, of hugging the bed, the largest floor space available. After putting fans on it, the lace ones can dry in 2 hours, much more for these heavy weight shawls. It would have taken too much out of me to do all three, not to mention the time it would entail, probably all day to get three dry, possibly longer.... and there's my nemesis (the moth) to consider, our heirlooms must be protected.
As I pondered more and different spaces throughout the house I realized the answer wasn't there, we just don't have any floor space remaining. Yes I could have used a bed but we are talking sport weight shawls, lots of water. Yes I could have rolled them into towels and walked the water out and made a few loads of towel laundry. Instead I began to think outside the box and out of doors.
There are as many methods of blocking as there are people, well it seems like there are. I knew the approach I wanted to take was to use the shawls natural weight to care for the edges, that I didn't want to pin them out. There's a small picnic table on the back porch, the style that converts into a bench, just a wee thing.
This year I made two drainage racks using hardware cloth, PVC and foam pipe insulation, they are much like sweater drying nets.
After securing a few loose threads, I began to wash, hauling my large buckets of wet yarn through the house as they were finished. Miraculously the shawls were no worse for the wear and tear they'd been receiving. No nemesis had turned up for the big send off.
Here are the shawls, Kanuck is the blue green which is laid out over the table. Christmas Star is the brown/purple. They were both much larger then the table/mat so they are folded in half.
For Kanuck, the edges were gently smoothed out until I had the natural border, allowing gravity to weight the edge. Star has sharper points and I pulled each out and allowed it to dry over the cloth, thought about pinning it out but it's really so large to begin with that there's no need.
The only danger with a folded method is the center back fold must be perfect, otherwise it will end wonky. I'm not terribly fiddly, nor can I stand for long periods, so I slammed these out quickly but I did take time to make sure the back folded well.
At this point your seeing creases in the shawl right? They actually had none. Sure there's a bit of a seam down the back but that will wear.
Finally we have the stole, this puppy is about 80+ inches long. I added a large crochet border while I was using up the yarn plus my gauge might have been a tad off.  For this one I used a shower chair and the edge of the largest Jacuzzi style tub. The shawls so long that it hangs down and almost reaches the bottom on the side you can't see as well as the floor in the front. Yup we make big shawls.

Since posting several people have wanted to see these shawls, Kanuck's pattern is here.
The kits are hereWe have VERY limited yarn available and it's been discontinued by the manufacturer.

Christmas Star is still being produced, knit and dyed by so many, it too is a lovely shawl from this past year. The pattern is here. We got a lot of call for these shawls, Raven and Dickens for Christmas knitting this year.

Lastly I just want to make sure ya’ll know how much we love and appreciate, each and every one of you. So much patience, fore bearing and loyalty shown on your part. Not to mention the emotional support, you’ve shown us through the years. I’m very grateful that you have stuck around through my diseases, illness, that horrific short term memory loss, the surgeries, all scary stuff but you allowed us to make amends where needed and keep coming back, it's humbling. I thank you, your all incredible in my book and we all highly esteem (read LOVE), all ya’ll. Thank you for being part of our story. Merry Christmas.

Pantone 2018, Elf Fat, Dog and Harry Potter stitch markers

Hi Kiddies, time for an update before I have to go on forever so much has been happening.

First we give you Ultra Violet, the color of the year per Pantone 2018. Personally I love the hair/glasses combo but we took the color from the photo of the moon.
Color can be dyed on anything you like. Yarn, Silk scarf, silk ribbon, embroidery ribbon, yarn, roving, any raw fiber, the list goes on.

Madame DuPomp is open we still have 5 goodie bags left, will you get one? Also added into the mix is this portfolio bag I found. Cool right?
We ordered more yarn, it will be in once we get ready to dye this one. We are still making everything so we have slotted dyeing to begin first week of January.

Real big news is that we got a GREAT buy on a sock base, we call it Elf Fat Sock. It's a nice merino/nylon super wash 380 yards/100g and it's now my "go to" yarn for dyeing samples since it just does everything I ask of it. Special Introductory price of just $15.50, trust me the 10 pounds we bought wont last long at this price. As soon as we need to restock it will go up at least three dollars. Time for a sweater right! Along with this base we got in Elf MCN (merino cashmere nylon) in sock weight. This one is on sale for $24 as an intro price. If it sells well we will be replacing the one we currently have. To order either you need to PM me as we haven't had time to load this to the Order Yarn Page.

Along with the new base we have new colors. Glazed is a term which has been bandied about a good deal of late but it's a technique we have been doing forever. Above is Glazed Burgundy, below is Glazed Azure. Both are shown here on our new Elf Fat Sock. Can only be worked on super wash bases. You can order here or PM me.

If you follow us on Facebook and Instagram, see buttons on the right (PC only) you've already seen our keen new dog stitch marker set. Many breeds are represented here and if we run out, we'll replace one with another fun one. Some of them can even stand alone.

Along with the dog set we are making a new Harry Potter set. First few people to order this set will be getting some fun goodies. One extra is the time turner necklace (really moves) and we found a neat Snitch bracelet, more on that in a few weeks.

If you hang in our Ravelry Group you know that we just gave away a massive amount of yarn. More then enough for a sweater it was a bag and a half. We have another contest going on right now, this one has 12 skeins of yarn up for grabs. Head on over and tell us your favorite shawl shape. The last contest was for the most inspiring photo that we need to turn into yarn. Rise won with this lovely.
Soon as I saw it I knew I had to try to paint it. Sometimes what looks great doesn't translate but we are sure going to try. There were many great photos displayed in that thread. What's fun is that Pixie #1 choose different photos then I did to play with. You can look forward to many more new colors... in both our styles coming out in 2018.

Fae Yarn and Fae Spinning Clubs are now open, be sure to nab your spot. We are keeping this open long enough for you to get your Christmas present funds in, probably closing towards the end of the first week of January. We are going to go to the Grimm realm for inspiration. We each are getting this leather bound book to RAL (read a long) with you all. We are really excited to be working on the following designs for ya'll: Briar Rose, Little Mermaid (yeah not Brothers Grimm but the design!) Seven Sisters (even have several slipper charms already), Hansel & Gretel, Cinderella, Red Riding Hood (Faroese cape! Blood will flow, think the wolf will make an appearance?), Sleeping Beauty and of course Maleficent (I WILL make her bow to the needle). Which one do you want to see the most?

Madame DuPompadour

Finally, we have lift off, the Madame DuPompadour space shuttle is away, you can find it here. Madame Du Pompadour

You wont want to miss this one from the luxury yarn and beads to all the lovelies freebies, fly on over and check it out. We like the lighter colors for this and will do any color you would like to see.  This is a wash of the faintest color, not to be confused with pastels.

Twist page has been reloaded and we have LOADS of scarves which can still get to you in time for Christmas gift giving. You can see these on our Facebook page and Instagram feed.

Madame Du Pompadour

Needed to pop in and let you know how the designs are progressing.

To start with Madame Du Pompadour has these amazing materials, 55/45% silk/cashmere blend of yarn with crystals and silver lined beads to make for a high end, luxurious knit. The shawls in test knit but I'm still tinkering with the edging. I know what I want and will work and re-work it until I'm satisfied with it. What with it being a mystery I think I can keep it as such and just say that it's AWESOME! It starts with a pretty flower which marches into Versailleske garden paths, bringing you out to this scalloped ending. SMASHING, no modesty here. This design has the old school Yarn Fairy written all over it. I dug deep for this pattern and I'm very pleased with it. Will set upon the goodies this coming week and open sales shortly thereafter. Then we will get everything pending out the door as well. This coming week will fly.
The other patterns we have for you are the yearly KAL's. Not sure when these will hit but we are hard at work on them. Baltimore Album Blanket is cruising along at a steady clip but requires some very intensive pattern working in order to make it. This isn't your normal "knit work" but rather an applique blanket. Tangier's is much simpler to chart and the design is still solidifying. That said all the yarn is in stock and inspiring all by itself. We are going back up in both needle (1) and thread size (extra fine lace) to a manageable numbers.
Upcoming in 2018, we introduce the Year of the Grim, as in Grimm Fairy Tales. Fairy tales the way they were meant to be, a little darker then the Disney versions. We will be bringing you a true "blood" color cape/shawl with a variety of reds to choose from. Can you guess which tale this is from? We've planned and drafted the entire year out, something new for us but with the work load, entirely necessary. This will keep us moving along at a nice clip and still allow for life's interruptions and other designers KAL's.
All in all, ending and beginning the years with a bang. We hope you'll all attend, enjoy. YF

Scotland and Vanishing Point

We are hard at work attempting to get Advent out before the KAL begins. There was a flood of orders 20 days ago and that's what we've been focused on ever since.
Even so the creative side never sleeps. It was busy in the back of my mind while my hands were busy with the work, this is the result. Drum roll please... we give you Scotland.
Above on Elf Merino, below left on Fairy Medium, right on our Cash/merino sock base. A bad photo so I took the one on the left today out in the sun.

Finally in the toes of a pair of socks. More to come on social media as we have more length on the socks. Isn't this a fun color? Anything you work up will swirl and it had to be Scotland as it's the only place DH and I really need to see before we die.
Next up is Vanishing Point, this was an accident I needed to recreate and so I did.

Dyed on a few different bases so that you can see how they vary. I love the Fairy Glamour, it's so classy on that silver. Will look great in a shawl and I can make it more subdued, to have less variation on the pops. It will end up being more of a solid blue/purple color instead of with these great pops of color.  :-)  LOL talking myself out of painting it in a shawl as we speak. I think it will still come through with all the fantastic colors but they will be subtle enough to work up lace.

These skeins look even better in person, no matter what I do, they always look so much better in real life. PM me for your invoice and join the ranks who are knitting this up for Christmas presents.
Oh and don't forget the Holiday club will close first of December which is just over one week away. We have been listing new Advent colors, the shawl KAL begins on Friday but there's no time like the present to get you a set of these lovelies. Still dyeing for Mandala, Cleo and all the other KALs we have open. Spinning Club and Fae Yarn Club for this month have been dyed and will ship by the end of this month. And the Breed Study version three is open but will be dyed here soon. We need about 3 more of us now, which is a good thing :-) wmdress at sbcglobal.net, enjoy!

Weekend Update

Quick update for ya'll, not sure ya'll know that we got a major shipment of roving in over the summer months. Yeah I've been quiet about it, ya'll been kept out of the loop far too long. Finally got some of it, (most of it?) loaded onto the Fiber page and made a button for it. You'll find them dirt cheap and some exotic, all are very lovely when painted in any of our colors or just give me guidelines or just tell me to go for it. Fiber
Did you see the video yesterday? It was a chopped video (loaded the wrong one) so I'm making another one today. There I'll share how the wool batts look like animal skins when dyed in one piece, up to 8 oz at once. These are just $15 per 4 oz and didn't make it into the button, sigh. Video's are found here be sure to subscribe and click the bell (alarm) button.
  List of happenings:
Mandala's Heart has begun, clue 2 comes out next week.
Caesar and Cleopatra last call
Advent in full dyeing mode-special requests welcome. Shawl has been revealed

Holiday Club open only until 12-1

Holiday Club

Hi Kiddies, it's that time again, the Holiday Club is now open.

Everything comes all wrapped up, ready to be put under your tree. As ya'll know, we go over board and spoil ya'll... well and truly over the minimum up on the site. Come out and play.

AND WANTED test knitters. :-) For Plain Jane and Madame Du Pompadour, if interested, PM me. We provide a 25% refund upon completion prior to MKAL beginning and the pattern is free.
If you haven't visited the Ravelry site lately, you should. We are making our Fall Sweater, I'm also knitting on tops this year. The blue one is from October.

This silver one is what I've got going on now. It's Kaylie of Firefly, our mechanic with the lace, ribbons and bows. I'm adding the tiny Swav crystal buttons up each side of the lace panel. The large eyelet holes going across the top will be getting the silk ribbon I dyed today, it's a perfect match.

We are doing all sorts of things over at Ravelry, including a snap contest shortly. HUM,,, been wondering what it was going to be and how it was going to work... perhaps that's the contest,,, share all of your projects. The one with the most going wins! LOL not ancient WIP's and UFO's but the stuff you actually touch at least once every week.
What do you say?
Come out and play.

Update

Hi Kiddies, just a quick update! Last "dye day" turned into a dye week ya'll know we love to dye so no complaints here. We did up all the KAL orders, custom orders and did up a bunch of YF OOAK 100% cashmere. All of it shipped out last week in THREE massive mailing sacks that USPS has for bulk mailing.
We accidentally purchased our high end yak blend in DK instead of sock weight. This is 60/20/20 SWMerino/yak/silk, completely and entirely luxurious, would make an amazing sweater. Normally $31.50 ea, if you want all of it, wheeling and dealing time.  Anyone interested in this should PM me to talk about what can be done with this base. It goes saturated real well.
By the way, if you ever need any yarn for any project, do keep us in mind. The yarn on the right was made up for a special Christmas shawl. We can match any color and have more bases then almost all small Indies who only carry just three-five. Not only can we paint anything but our pricing is normally, well below market value. Quality, value, who could ask for more.

UPCOMING

  • We have at least one more shawl this year which is rapidly taking shape, Madame Du Pompadour ALA Doctor Who. This is going to be worked in a heavy lace weight, light colors, crystals and sparkly beads to do her justice.
  • The design for Maleficent keeps going back to the scrape heap but she's still plugging in and making an appearance from time to time.
  • ADVENTurous kits are all ready have a look see.
  • The Holiday club will open early November in order to give you all a chance to get in timely. We will allow for the the shipping date of December 15 for USA, earlier for International orders.
  • Breed Study 3 is shaping up plus we have some CVM in a lovely deep, dark Twilight color that's so amazing. These will be bagged up in little 1 oz like the Rambo Rainbows.
  • Boutique is now open, we are making hats, woven scarves, collars, fingerless gloves and the like, small gifts in time for your Holiday shopping. Just in case you run out of knitting time. These are all one of a kind items, each artistically decorated in curly locks. If you'd like to see more stay tuned.
  • There's a new sale addition for us. Seems we are having a Black Friday sale but if there's anything you have to have before then I recommend snapping it up, especially the YF OOAK as they just can't be repeated.
2018 year long KAL's are in everyone's mind here. The blanket is amazing! We have a Baltimore Album quilt style blanket. This one is so much fun, some 3-D, some lace work, all so completely different from anything we've done in the past. The typical quilt would look something like this... but we are working towards getting a large center with radiating borders instead of blocks.
2018 Heirloom year long KAL has us finally getting to Tangiers. The design has the feel of the lovely tile work with the desert all around you. The colors are a golden turmeric and a dark night blue so far. Do let me know if you have a color idea. Looks like it's a square, possibly center diamond, not positive about that just yet. What we are positive about is the base, this year we are moving back up to a fine lace weight. Cheers all around. At 2/28nm it's still fine enough to get the job done. This super luxurious yarn is 55% silk/45% cashmere, for superior drape and hand... this one's just begging to be worked.
Well Kiddies, I must away, packing up 64 mini 1 ounce bags for our contribution to the Spinning Box. Have a great week.

Closing

Hope your having a great weekend. Just needed to pop in and let you know that we are closing the 4th quarter Fae Yarn Club next week. Hop on over and sign up before it's too late. We are finishing up the year with a bang.
The 2nd Version of Breed Study box is almost completely dyed, some stunning colors on some rare breeds. Some of them totally freaked me out,,, to dye them as they are so pretty naturally.  We got all of these much cleaner then the last box with pre-scours done real well, some as many as 5 scours and 20 rinses for the extra dirty ones. There are only a few more openings, hurry so you can be assured of your spot. The photo shows some of the actual fiber you'll find in your box.
     Have a great weekend, enjoy!

September update

Hi Kiddies, just wanted to pop in and tell ya'll that we are having a wild time dyeing here. It's my favorite thing to do so there's a lot of dancing, singing and happiness which goes into all the love we pour into each skein. We have a great deal of fun new items we are cranking out and you have 2 new bases.
But first the shop update this week. We have a truly one of a kind yarn, we are making it ourselves! Nope, not hand spun but hand wound from all those cones of cobweb we had. They are no more, we are down to the very last of them finally. Since they needed to be re-purposed and my winder didn't like them, Roberta has put the Monkey (winder) to shame. She's cranked out massive yardage over the last 48 hours and will continue to do so until the cobweb is in the past. We have a lace of 1150 yards/100 grams and a sock at 430 yards/100 grams. Some really fun colors have come from this venture and I look forward to sharing them with you. We will be blowing this out at a ridiculously low price and loading all the colors by the 14th on the Twist page. But the preview video will be available tomorrow night. Are you set to be the first notified? Subscribe now and click the bell for updates so you find out first.
It's late so I'm going to give you a short list of what's happening.

July update

Hi Kiddies, long time to see eh? Need to let you know that there's been a Twist update. If this is the only place that you find these things out, you need to get on our other social media platforms, all are found in the bar on the right (full screen PC only). The first place I write to is the Yahoo group, then Ravelry, Facebook then finally Instagram. It takes longer to write to IG and I'm not faithful with FB so I recommend one of the first two methods. Also we have been doing videos and people have been purchasing off of the wet skeins from there before it even gets to the Twist page. More about that below.
We have been very busy getting things in order for shipping.  It's been a whirlwind of activity here, with it all landing in massive bags throughout the front rooms. Every surface was covered and slowly we are beginning to see chairs and tables again. I'm sure ya'll have seen, via paypal notification, your orders are all out, custom, Jo, Twist, Kitties and now the first shipment of the 3rd quarter Fae Yarn Club is shipping. That one I can't set notifications for.
Last, but far from least is the Breed Study. We will be working on it through the weekend making up bags and boxes, just needed to clear space to stack all the boxes up.  The text is almost complete but I find we are going to need to dye more roving last minute.  I ordered tons of fiber that didn't get here on time so we can do this again and again until all the breeds are represented.
Been seeing a lot of doctors and having a bunch of testing done. They might actually have found out what's wrong with me, 15 years later. Crazy right? Seems I have Lupus, which might have been medically induced! Yup my heart doctor told me I had to be on a beta blocker for the rest of my life,,, all those years ago when this all started. We are still awaiting the results of that test, should be here on Monday. Meanwhile, I continue to focus on all the things I "can" do instead of focusing on all the things this old bag of bones can not do.  I continue to hit my 5,550 steps most days and some days go over 10,000 I have smaller goals due to my Achilles going out from walking. I have stopped all the high blood pressure medicine and have cut way back on the salt which was low already.  Last nights meal had 180 mg of salt and we LOVED it so it will be repeated. You can find the recipe here.
Speaking of the things I can't do. FB can be a real PIT! Someone on there posted on one of our video's that my stove was an embarrassment and I needed to get out the comet. I don't believe she knows that the tendons in my hands and elbows are on strike. Not to mention all the rest.  It's just unkind, thoughtless and flat out mean to judge someone like that, grrr, nuff said.
Next week I'm going under the knife again which is why we have been pressing so hard to get all the orders out. The tendon on my right hand knuckle, the one closest to the hand slips off of the knuckle when I clench the fist. Writing and attempting to feed myself has been funny at time, more often then not, just flat out frustrating. This will not in any way shape for form,,, change anything. I promise, Pixie #1 has stepped into my shoes before and she will do it again, very professionally I'm sure and take care of me while she's doing it. We will still dye and do the KAL's, design and produce Twists for you. We are well prepared for it though as we have dyed up all the clubs in advance. The Spinning Club is drying now (oh dear I need to those labels) they are so pretty. Yarn club just needs goodies now and we have made all of our fiber up for the Spinning Box which we are in monthly. There's one thing that I'm really looking forward to while I'm laid up, that's Pixie #1 making Pixie Dust AKA sprinkles. Oh gee! I didn't get a photo of the sprinkles I loved. Oh! You can still see it here... I rave about them in the latest video.
Speaking of video's are ya'll subscribed? Hit subscribe and then notifications. That way you'll be first to know of new yarns. I have been doing video's well before the Twist is loaded. Great time to see the goods before anyone else can claim them.
Plenty of stuff for me to do during the 2 weeks I'll be in recovery. I got a bed desk (HAHA like my feet aren't going to work) and a book stand as well as several books. I just love the feel of of the paper in my hands, the smell of it and everything just really does it for me. I buy all my books on half com as I can get them really cheap. Most of it's just fiction and I end up tossing the books when I'm done.  I read chronologically so I have the last 4-5 Ann Rice books.
Found a new to me author who came so very highly recommended, Patrick Rothfuss has a trilogy that's not complete. Normally I don't dive into things that aren't complete but I had too. When the books came in they have review from Orson Scott Card and Anne McCaffrey as well. AND these books are hefty! Nothing I love better then a beefy novel that can make the pain recede for a time. The right book can be better then pain meds.
Also have the Buffy set on DVD sitting here waiting for me to get through it. Yup, I'm all set in that department. First the sleep though, 2 days of it. Please don't allow this to stop you from writing, I can't emphasis this enough.
Peeps, you keep me on the straight and narrow, your support keeps me going, your notes encourage me, your prayers see me through. Your requests for fun and funky stuff like the Kitty KAL get me to painting which I love over all things. Allow me to continue to do that which I love and don't let this stop you from contacting me. We wouldn't exist without you and I thank you from the bottom of my heart. Be blessed, safe, healthy and happy. Enjoy each day as it's a blessing.
Clean your toilets as that's what I'd do if I could, never take your health for granted, never go to sleep angry. Climbing down from my soapbox now, ya'll have a great day.

Dye Week

Whoohoo! ChiaoGoo added fixed 00 and 000 needles to their line! We've wanted these for so long it's not funny, happy to have them do this. We will still carry the HiyaHiya micros as well.
Did you get to watch the quick video from yesterday? Anything in there you want to swoop on? We are rinsing and drying today, photos will be available by the end of this week.
Check out Purple Rain! Here's the inspiration photo. There are only 2 skeins available on Pixie Single Sock but this will be added to our color line up as a permanent. The gradients on Elf Kisses are OOAK and wont be repeated.
Tomorrow we hit the vats again and will be dyeing up a storm. Anything you want to see, just give a holler as we have room to add more and will probably be dyeing through the end of this week. We will then label, pack and ship next week. We will dye again on the 17 & 18th and then be taking a bit of a breather, so do let us know what you need now.
All clubs will be shipping next week, everything will be outta here! So if your waiting for something, the wait will be over shortly. Oh and if you joined the spinning club in June, we are sending you a special little something with your July shipment, that's how we figured out how to handle the various buy in dates.
Breed Study, went to ship the lovely box we bought ya'll and found out that paper weighs much more then fiber. It's going to cost us more to ship it then we'd anticipated so next time we are probably going to ship thumb drives. Unless of course I can get them in by next week... off to see if that's possible. ENJOY!! and go spin something.
